Box Score The Columbia International University women's soccer team opened their season in Jacksonville, FL tonight as they played Florida College. This was the first game for both teams and they both came out with the energy to try and start the season undefeated. The teams battled for 110 minutes as the game went in to double overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net to give their team the win. Both teams now move to 0-0-1 on the season.
Through the first fifteen minutes of play it was very back and forth as each team was trying to find their footing, but the Rams were the first ones to get a shot on goal as sophomore Abby Martin rocketed a ball towards goal. That was the first shot off the game and it opened the flood gates as both teams were getting comfortable. The Falcons took the next three shots as one was blocked, then one was wide, and lastly sophomore Sam Wammock made a great save at the 24:05 mark to really energize her team. After the save it was all CIU as they went full out attack mode and over the next 10 minutes were able to produce five shots with three of them on goal. The Falcons would get one more shot on goal before the half, but the game would remain scoreless going into the break.
The Rams started the second half off on a good foot as they were able to force the Falcons offsides and then use those calls to get the first shot of the half. Junior Angela McMaster registered the shot for the Rams at the 52:14, but just like the first half the Falcons goalie was there to make the save. The teams would continue to battle and put pressure on one another, but the Falcons were able to take the next two shots with the latter one coming at the 66:09 mark. The Rams continued to pressure the Falcons defense and make them play back further than they wanted too. Just a little over two minutes from the last shot by the Falcons the Rams Janie Holland was able to get a shot off, but the Falcons goalie was there to make the save again. The Rams would get one more shot off in the second half while the Falcons were able to get two, but neither team found the back of the net and it was time for overtime.
As the first overtime got underway the Rams were able to get a shot on goal by freshman Sotiria Tsilionis. After that shot, the overtime turned in favor of the Falcons as they were able to get three shots on goal in just under two minutes. However, that was no problem for Wammock as she made three tremendous saves to keep the game tied and force a second overtime. The second overtime was all CIU as they had five shots compared to one for the Falcons. The best chance for the Rams came at the 107:16 mark as junior Alanna Battermann broke away from the defense and it was just her and the goalie. She went to chip the ball past the goal, but a last minute slide and throw of the hands deflected the ball and the Falcons were able to clear it. As the time ran out and neither team scored the first game of the season for both teams ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Rams will be back in action tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. as they take on Johnson University FL. To see up to date game information please follow the CIU Rams twitter account.
