WILMORE, Ky. — CIU men's track and field closed the NCCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a national champion, multiple podium finishes and an eighth-place team finish out of 22 programs Friday at Asbury University.
Cameron Montgomery led the Rams with a national championship in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 17.00 meters to score 10 points for CIU. Montgomery also picked up All-American honors in the hammer finishing third.
Donavan Latimer added an All-American performance in the triple jump, placing third with a leap of 13.48 meters.
The Rams also picked up points in the relay events. CIU's 4x100-meter relay team of DeVarius Ponds, Donavan Latimer, Dallas Turner and James Mayo placed sixth in 42.67, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Denim Jones, Latimer, Mark Zagata and Mayo also finished sixth with a time of 3:23.62.
Dante Shuler competed in the shot put, finishing 13th with a throw of 12.89 meters while just missing an All-American finish in the hammer coming in 4th.
Spencer Evans placed 21st in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.59.
Combined with performances from the opening two days, including Hunter McCaskill's All-American runner-up finish in the decathlon, Dallas Turner's All-American finish in the high jump and multiple scoring performances across the meet, the Rams finished eighth in the final team standings.
CIU will next compete at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships May 20-22 in Asheville, N.C.
