Hunter McCaskill pole vaults for CIU athletics

McCaskill, Montgomery earn All-Conference honors on days one and two of AAC Outdoors

MONTREAT, N.C. — CIU men's track & field team stands fifth in the team standings after two days of competition at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.

Hunter McCaskill highlighted the meet for the Rams by earning All-Conference honors with a third-place finish in the decathlon. McCaskill posted top-three finishes among decathletes in the shot put (1st, 11.92m), discus (3rd, 32.68m), and javelin (3rd, 38.92m) during the competition.

Mark Zagata also competed in the decathlon, highlighted by a first-place finish among decathletes in the javelin at 42.31 meters. Zagata also posted marks of 30.65 meters in the discus and 11.03 meters in the shot put.

In the throws, Cameron Montgomery earned All-Conference honors with a third-place finish in the hammer throw at 54.11 meters and added a runner-up finish in the shot put at 16.21 meters to collect a second All-Conference honor. Dante Shuler finished fourth in the hammer throw at 52.24 meters and ninth in the shot put at 13.26 meters. Bryce Scarborough (36.72m) and Casey Feaster (33.53m) also competed in the hammer.

Jeremy Daniels added a fifth-place finish in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 47.96 meters.

In the jumps, Nicolás Ortiz  finished fourth in the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 3.90 meters, while Dallas Turner added a fifth-place finish in the high jump at 1.92 meters.

On the track, James Mayo recorded a time of 10.95 in the 100 meters, while DeVarius Ponds followed at 11.03. Zyon Black posted a time of 1:03.61 in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Rams' 4x100 relay team of Ponds, Donavan Latimer, Turner and Black placed eighth in 43.25.

In distance action, CIU's 4x800 relay team of Spencer Evans, Julian Carranza, Jacobo Garcia-Rivera and Joey Canning placed fifth with a time of 8:31.10.

CIU concludes the AAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday, April 25.
