GREER, S.C. — CIU men's golf closed out day one of the Competitor's Cup at Greer Golf Club with a strong showing, taking a 4-2 lead over Bob Jones University (BJU) in the Ryder Cup-style event.
The Competitor's Cup features a head-to-head match play format between CIU and BJU, with Monday's action consisting of four-ball and alternate shot matches.
CIU opened the day in four-ball play, splitting the three matches. The duo of Micah Smith and Luke Hammond led the way with a convincing 5-and-3 victory. BJU claimed the other two points, as Camden Stikeleather and Braydon Hileman fell 3 and 2, while Andrew Haarlow and Santos Espinosa were also defeated 3 and 2.
The Rams responded in dominant fashion during the afternoon's alternate shot session, sweeping all three matches to seize control of the competition. Hammond and Espinosa delivered the most decisive win of the day at 6 and 5. Stikeleather and Haarlow added a 2-and-1 victory, and Smith and Hileman secured a 3-and-2 win to cap the sweep.
Tuesday's competition will feature singles play, with each match worth one point as the Rams look to close out the Competitor's Cup.
