Rams find success across several events on final day in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The CIU men's track & field team wrapped up competition Saturday at Emory's Thrills in the Hills with multiple Appalachian Athletic Conference and NCCAA qualifying performances.

In the field events, Nicholas Ortiz recorded an AAC qualifying clearance of 3.80 meters in the pole vault.

Cameron Montgomery led the Rams in the shot put with a fourth-place finish and an AAC and NCCAA qualifying mark of 16.18 meters, which also met the NAIA "B" standard. Dante Shuler also met the AAC standard with a throw of 12.05 meters, while Caius Johns added a mark of 11.35 meters and Casey Feaster recorded 9.50 meters.

In the discus, Shuler recorded a mark of 35.01 meters, followed by Johns at 34.28 meters.

In the jumps, Donavan Latimer posted a mark of 6.15 meters in the long jump, while Zyon Black added a distance of 5.38 meters.

On the track, DeVarius Ponds recorded a time of 11.49 in the 100 meters. Mark Zagata led CIU in the 400 meters with a time of 51.84, while Denim Jones followed at 53.26.

In distance events, Joey Canning (4:30.55) and Jacobo Garcia-Rivera (4:30.69) competed in the 1500 meters, while Julian Carranza posted a time of 2:12.55 in the 800 meters.

CIU returns to action next weekend at the Electric City Invite in Anderson, S.C.
