COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia International University's women's track & field team delivered a strong showing Friday and Saturday at the John-Hunter Classic, a home meet honoring the legacy and memory of two-time CIU NAIA pole vault national champion John-Hunter James.
The Rams were led by a dominant weekend from Coral Curry in the throws. Curry captured first place finishes in both the discus (34.40m) and hammer throw (46.73m), continuing her standout start to the outdoor season. She also added a runner-up finish in the shot put with a mark of 10.95m.
Jerchel Geathers-Washington also contributed in the throws, finishing second in the discus (34.22m), third in the hammer (39.72m), and sixth in the shot put (9.79m).
On the track, Arion Jefferson led CIU with a record-breaking performance in the 400 meters, winning the event in 58.99 to set a new program record. Jefferson also placed third in the 100 meters (12.70) and fifth in the 200 meters (26.40). Zyra Spann added a fifth-place finish in the 100 meters (13.06) and seventh in the 200 meters (27.59), while Michaela Oglesby recorded a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (16.65) and third in the 400 meters (1:19.99).
Elizabeth Gustafson turned in a strong performance in the 400 meters, finishing fifth in 1:00.97, and also placed fourth in the long jump (4.68m). Morgan Hartman paced the middle-distance group with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters (2:29.53), while Jordan Wray added a time of 2:42.57 in the same event.
In the field events, Lydia Gustafson led the Rams with a record-setting performance in the high jump, winning the event with a clearance of 1.57 meters to establish a new program record. Gustafson also finished second in the long jump (4.78m) and triple jump (9.35m). Bethany Rymer added a fourth-place finish in the javelin (29.43m), and Oglesby (4.55m) and Spann (4.19m) also recorded marks in the long jump.
In the pole vault, Caroline Rimmer cleared 3.14 meters to win the event.
CIU also saw success in the relays, with the 4x100 relay team of Spann, Oglesby, Gustafson and Jefferson finishing second in 50.45, while the 4x400 relay team of Gustafson, Oglesby, Hartman and Jefferson captured first place in 4:16.02.
The Rams will return to competition Mar. 26–28 at Emory's Thrills in the Hills in DeKalb County, Ga.
