Rams power past Bruins in dominant 16-6 victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - CIU baseball opened up the series against Carolina University (N.C.) (7-12) with their bats on fire as they hit five homers in the 16-6 win over the Bruins. CIU improves to 15-13 overall. 

CIU 16 CU 6: A solo shot from Graham Peeler put the Rams on the board in the second, and they added four more runs in the third, highlighted by a homer from Colton Lopez. They tacked on another run in the fourth with a sac fly from Bradley Garland (6-0), but the biggest inning of the day came in the fifth. Mason Turner and Tre Williams led off with back-to-back homers, followed by an RBI single from Lopez and a two-RBI double from Garland to extend their lead to 11-0. The Bruins battled back this frame, adding two of their own on a two-run home run. Both teams went quietly in the sixth and seventh, but the Rams added another in the eighth off a Bruins' error. Carolina added two more of their own with another two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to bring the score to 12-4. Turner hit his second home run of the game, scoring three runs, and Peeler knocked in another run to give the Rams a 16-4 advantage. Another two-run shot from the Bruins gave them six runs, but Collin Otte closed the game with back-to-back strikeouts. 

Box Score Highlights: 

  • Williams, Peeler, and Lopez recorded four hits. 

  • Turner led the team with five RBI after two homers, becoming the sixth player in program history to hit two home runs in one game. 

  • The Rams outhit the Bruins 20-10 to tie their single-game hit record.
