COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU volleyball took their home court to finish the CIU Invitational with a doubleheader against Michigan-Dearborn and Faulkner University (Ala.) on Saturday. Only dropping one set, CIU went 3-0 on the weekend and improved their record to 10-1.
Match One: CIU vs. Michigan-Dearborn (25-9, 25-10, 21-25, 25-20): The Wolverines were outmatched in the first two sets but battled back and took set three despite the Rams' 10-0 run to start the set. The fourth set went back and forth, but a kill from Hanah Weiss and an attack error from Dearborn gave CIU their second win of the weekend.
Katie Camp led the Rams, hitting .407 with 13 kills. The Rams' attack was reinforced by Hadassah Davis (nine kills), Gabriela Vega (seven kills), and Weiss (seven kills). Vega and Camp combined for 15 total blocks, Kamelia De Jesus chipped in 32 assists, and Kelcey Mangum led the Rams with 21 digs.
Match Two: CIU vs. Faulkner (28-26, 25-16, 25-17): The Rams needed extra points to take set one but settled in and quickly took sets two and three. Weiss was the driving force behind the Rams' impressive .357 attack percentage with 19 kills (.484). Camp was also in double digits with ten kills and led the team with three blocks. Mangum and Lexabel Rojas protected CIU's side of the net with 18 and 12 digs, respectively, and De Jesus added 42 more assists on the day.
What Coach Katie Weiss is saying, "It was a great home tournament with hard-working teams in every match. We had to make adjustments, and several players stepped up and made a big difference. I am excited to start conference play soon!"
