Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | gfrierson

Volleyball wraps up weekend by adding two more tallies to season win column

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After facing a setback on Friday in the Hoosier State, CIU volleyball continued to plow forward on Saturday to close out the Onset Invitational. The Rams dispatched both Taylor (Ind.) and (RV) Xavier (La.) to move to 7-1 on the season.

Match One: CIU 3 Taylor 0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-14): Taylor was outmatched from the first serve as the Rams dismantled the Trojans. The Ram's .323 attack percentage highlighted an offensive onslaught that saw Hanah Weiss hit .417 with 12 kills. The Rams had two other players in double-digit kills in the form of Hadassah Davis (10) and Katie Camp (10). Kelcey Mangum led the Rams in digs 14 while setter Kamelia De Jesus posted 14 assists. The Rams chalked up 18 block assists, with Gabriela Vega contributing five on her own

Match Two: CIU 3 Xavier 2: (25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-7): The Rams struggled with their foe from Louisiana through the first three sets. However, CIU would turn up the intensity in the final two, displaying utter dominance, outscoring Xavier 40-19 in the fourth and fifth sets. Weiss was excellent once again, recording a season-high 20 kills and a .357 attack percentage. Camp was one kill shy of her season high with 17 kills, while Lydia Gustafson did it all for the Rams with six kills and eight total blocks. Vega and Mangum each had four service aces, as Mangum totaled 30 digs. De Jesus added a double-double with 43 assists and 22 digs. Lesiray Nazario Marrero added to the Ram's dig total with 15.

What Coach Katie Weiss is saying: "This weekend was a great example of how the line between excellent and average is such a small margin. We started the tournament average, but thankfully we finished with excellence. I'm proud of how the team battled and fought this weekend."

Up Next: CIU will welcome several teams to Columbia to participate in the CIU Invitational, with the event getting underway on Friday, Aug. 30, as the Rams host Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) at 7:00 p.m. EST.
