MARION, Ind. - CIU men's track & field capped off an unforgettable performance at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday with their first-ever NAIA outdoor individual championship.
Deandre Leith accomplished the task by taking home the top spot in the Shot Put with a school record mark of 18.09m. Leith entered hallowed ground as the only other CIU track & field athlete to be distinguished as an NAIA national champion besides three-time indoor Pole Vault champion John-Hunter James.
Leith was joined in the Shot Put by freshman Cameron Montgomery, who finished top-25 posting a mark of 15.68m
Coach John Sparks spoke on his men's team, saying, "Our men's team represented well. Dario Laing finished 15th in the 110 hurdles with his performance on Thursday. Cameron gained valuable experience in the Shot Put. Deandre became just the second athlete in CIU history to win an NAIA national championship while setting two school records [Shot Put & Discus]."
The Rams finished 22nd out of the 77 teams that scored.
