PEMBROKE, N.C. - CIU men's track & field began their tune-up for the Outdoor Track & Field postseason on Saturday, taking part in the Braves Classic
In the men's 100 meters, Irvin Sumter clocked in at 11.63 seconds, securing the 19th spot, while freshman Elijah Seawright followed closely with a time of 12.17 seconds. Moving on to the men's 200 meters, senior Clayton Hammond claimed the 13th position with a time of 23.40 seconds, with freshmen Julian Carranza and senior Kevin Cunningham also putting up strong performances in the event.
In the men's 400 meters, Hammond continued to shine, finishing 7th with a time of 51.79 seconds, followed by Spencer Evans, Malik Beaver, Julian Carranza, Denim Jones, and Kevin Cunningham. The men's 5000 meters saw Joey Canning leading the CIU team with a time of 17:14.33, closely followed by Josh Zhang, Joel Baumgarten and Gavin Barfield.
Branson Rimmer stood out in the men's pole vault event, securing the 4th spot with a mark of 3.05m. Dario Laing was impressed with the men's long jump, earning the 2nd position with a mark of 6.73m. Seawright and Sumter also delivered commendable performances. Seawright continued his success in the men's triple jump, finishing 5th with a mark of 13.49m.
In the field events, Cameron Montgomery and Deandre Leith excelled in the men's shot put and discus events, with Montgomery (NAIA "B" Standard) claiming the top spot in the shot put at 15.41 meters while Leith was first in the discus (49.41, NAIA "A" Standard). Bryce Scarborough (shot put & discus) and Colton Buchanan (shot put) also competed.
The men's hammer event saw strong performances from Montgomery, Scarborough, and Buchanan. Both Montgomery (40.19) and Scarborough (40.08) threw over 40-meters in the hammer. Jeremy Daniels and Rimmer showcased their skills in the men's javelin, finishing 6th and 7th, respectively. Daniels set a PR with a distance of 40.85m.
What Coach John Sparks is saying: "We had several first-place performances today, and several more qualified for the postseason in the upcoming AAC and NCAA Championships. Overall, it was a good meet."
Up Next: The Rams will travel to the upstate of South Carolina to compete in the Electric City Invite hosted by Anderson University on April. 12 and April. 13.
