Rams Fall to Tigers on Final Shot

The Columbia International University women's basketball team welcomed Hiwassee College tonight as the Rams looked to run their winning streak to three games. The Rams and Tigers would battle all throughout the night as neither team could pull away, but the Tigers would hit a last second three to win, 58-57. The Rams drop to 3-11 on the season, while the Tigers move to 13-3.

The two teams would each trade the lead over the first two and a half minutes, but after that the Rams would go on a 10-1 run to stretch their lead with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter. The Rams would only score two more points in the quarter while the Tigers would score five, but the Rams took a 16-10 lead into the second quarter.

The Rams would open the half scoring the first basket, but the Tigers would go on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 18. In her first game of the season Moriah Siemens would stop the Tigers run and give the Rams their lead back. The two teams would battle over the next couple minutes, but the Tigers would end the half on a 9-0 run to take a 32-25 lead at the half.

Coming out of the half the Tigers would run their lead to nine, but the Tigers would go cold and the Rams would heat up a little. At the 2:02 mark after a good free throw from Ciara Boggs the Rams would tie the game at 38. However, after tying the game at 38 the Rams would go cold and the Tigers would end the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 43-38 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle that saw six lead changes and four ties. The Rams came out hot at the start of the fourth quarter and used a 6-0 run to take a 44-43 lead. At the 7:12 mark the Tigers would take the lead back after hitting both their free throws, but after a jumper from Moriah Siemens the Rams were back in front. However, over the next two minutes the Tigers would take a 52-48 lead. After another jumper from Moriah Siemens and a layup from Justice Mazyck the Rams would tie the game at 52. The Tigers would then jump back in front by three with just over two minutes remaining, but after jumpers from Liz Jenkins and Makeda DeSouza the Rams would take a 56-55 lead with just eighteen seconds remaining. The Tigers next possession they turned it over and fouled DeSouza who went to the free throw line and hit one of her two shots to give the Rams a two point lead with just seven seconds remaining. The Tigers would call a timeout and advance the ball with five seconds remaining. Out of the timeout the Tigers were able to get a three off and hit it to sink the Rams and win by one.

Columbia International shot 36.1 percent (22-61) from the floor and 4-of-12 from three, while the Tigers shot 27.6 percent (16-58) and 8-27 from beyond the arc...The Rams were able to force the Tigers into sixteen turnovers...The Rams held the edge in rebounds, 44-40, while also dishing out 16 assists...Raven Fleming led the Rams with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists...Liz Jenkins had 13 points and four assists, while in her first game Moriah Siemens had 10 points and seven assists...Valerie Cheek led the Tigers with 15 points.

The Rams will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Greenville, SC to take on Bob Jones University. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
