Doubleheader slate sees CIU face Campbellsville, No. 11 William Carey

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - CIU baseball took the field Friday afternoon to take on Campbellsville University (Ky.) and No. 11 William Carey University in two seven-inning doubleheaders at Milton Wheeler Field. The Rams battled in a close 5-4 contest against Campbellsville in the opener before taking on nationally ranked William Carey in the second game, falling 13-2.

Game One: CU 5 CIU 4: Despite a leadoff single from Kai Smith, the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead, and they extended this lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second. The Rams scratched one in the third with an RBI single from Eli Musgraves and evened the score in the fourth after a double from Daniel Sidoti and Maddux Smith. Campbellsville battled back and regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but a Corbin Wright single in the sixth tied the game once again. A single from Musgraves was not enough for the Rams to push another across in the seventh, and the Tigers were able to take the game with a sac fly.

In the Rams' best offensive outing of the season, Smith, Musgraves, and Jennings Greene led the team with two hits. Sidoti and Smith both recorded doubles, and CIU totaled three stolen bases. Manuel Geisel led the pitching staff with five strikeouts, with Alex Wiltz and Collin Otte combining for no hits.

Game Two: WCU 13 CIU 2: William Carey took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning, and the Rams struggled to move runners around in the first three frames. The Crusaders extended their lead to 4-0 after scoring three in the third. A single from Greene put the Rams on the board in the top of the fourth, but William Carey pulled away with seven more runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 11-1. Musgraves homered in the sixth to add another run for CIU, but the Crusaders responded with two more of their own. Even with two runners on in the top of the seventh, the Rams were unable to rally for a comeback.

Musgraves led the team with two hits, including his first home run of the season. Wright and Greene also notched hits for the Rams.

Up Next: CIU closes out a busy week and faces Campbellsville University (Ky.) at 11 AM CST and No. 11 William Carey University (Miss.) at 2:30 PM CST tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 7th.
