Thompson sets career HR mark as Rams sweep in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — CIU softball continued its historic start Saturday, sweeping Trinity College of Jacksonville (Fla.) in a road doubleheader with a 6-5 comeback win followed by a 25-2 rout. The Rams have now gone 5-1 on the week and improved to 15-3, the best start in program history.

Game One: CIU 6, Trinity College of Jacksonville 5: Trinity built a 5-1 lead through four innings before CIU rallied late to steal the opener. The Rams scored once in the sixth and erupted for four runs in the seventh to complete the comeback victory.

Sophomore outfielder Abigail Guthrie sparked the decisive inning with a two-run homer, and senior pitcher Brenna Fasching followed with a solo shot to give CIU the lead for good.

Freshman catcher Katie Rhyne drove in two runs on a pair of doubles, while junior outfielder Tristan Phillips added two hits and an RBI.

In the circle, Fasching earned the win with 3.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing four hits and striking out three after starter Raleigh Stewart worked the first 3.1 innings.

Game Two: CIU 25, Trinity College of Jacksonville 2 (5 inn.): CIU's offense exploded in game two, tying the program record for most runs scored in a game with 25 on 21 hits.

Junior infielder Caydon Thompson powered the attack with a home run and four RBIs, and her blast marked the 12th of her career, setting a new CIU program home run record.

Guthrie went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while senior Kami Meekins (2 hits) junior Carmella Korte (2 hits, 3 RBI), freshman Kenzley Horne (2 hits, 2 RBI), junior Lilli Petty (2 hits, 3 RBI), and freshman Hailey Whidden (1 hit, 3 RBI) all contributed multi-hit or multi-RBI efforts in the offensive surge.

Gabriella Czuczuk shone as well, adding a three-RBI home run to the Rams' drumming of TCJ. Czuczuk also earned the win, striking out four and allowing two hits in 3.0 innings of work, while junior Courtney Chavis closed things out in relief with two strikeouts over the final frames.
