CLEVELAND, Ga.- CIU softball opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play with a Saturday doubleheader at Truett McConnell, falling 5-4 in 10 innings in game one and 3-1 in game two. The Rams collected 22 hits across the two contests, including 15 in the opener, but were unable to hold off the Bears in either game. With the losses, CIU moves to 15-4 on the season.
Game One: TMU 5 CIU 4: Truett McConnell struck first in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead, and added another run in the third on an RBI single to extend the advantage to 2-0. CIU threatened early with hits in the first and second innings but left runners on base before finally breaking through in the fifth. The Rams took their first lead of the game when Caydon Thompson blasted a three-run home run to center field, scoring Abigail Guthrie and Lilli Petty to give CIU a 3-2 advantage.
The Bears answered in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3, and both teams traded scoring chances but were unable to break through across the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. CIU briefly moved ahead in the 10th when Carmella Korte lifted a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run. However, Truett McConnell responded in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly and a walk-off RBI to secure the 5-4 victory.Â
Despite the loss, the Rams finished with 15 hits. Thompson led the offense with a home run, double, and three RBIs, while Guthrie, Petty, Gabriella Czuczuk, and Tristan Phillips each recorded multiple hits.
Game Two: TMU 3 CIU 1: The Rams threatened early after Guthrie and Czuczuk reached on walks, but were left stranded. Korte singled in the second, and Petty added a single in the third, though CIU was unable to capitalize and remained scoreless through the first six innings. Truett McConnell took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and extended the advantage to 3-0 in the sixth. Phillips singled to lead off the seventh, and Raleigh Stewart followed with a single to bring her home and cut the deficit to 3-1. However, a flyout ended the Rams' comeback attempt.
Phillips led CIU with two hits as the Rams totaled seven in the game. In relief, Brenna Fasching allowed no hits and recorded a strikeout in the sixth inning.
