Rams pick up third win of the week with Friday split

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - CIU softball split its final day at the Space Coast Spring Games on Friday, earning a 2-1 win over Spring Arbor University (Mich.) before falling 9-0 to No. 6 Grand View University. The Rams wrapped up tournament play with a 3-1 showing over the final two days and now sit at 13-3 on the season.

Game One: CIU 2 Spring Arbor 1: The game remained scoreless through three innings before Spring Arbor broke through in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. CIU answered immediately in the bottom half. Raleigh Stewart singled to spark the rally, and after Caydon Thompson reached and advanced on an error, Hannah Murphy delivered a clutch two-run single to center to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage.

From there, Stewart took control. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out six and walking none to move to 3-0 on the season. She retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the win. CIU finished with four hits in the contest, one each from Abigail Guthrie, Lilli Petty, Stewart, and Murphy.

Game Two: Grand View 9 CIU 0: Grand View struck for three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two Rams errors and a wild pitch to build an early cushion. The Vikings added two more in the third on a two-RBI double and broke the game open with four runs in the fourth.

The Rams' lone baserunner came on a third-inning walk to Sophia Noriega-Mora, but CIU was unable to advance a runner past second base. In the circle, Isabella Davis took the loss, allowing five runs over three innings while striking out two. Hailey Whidden and Selah Brown combined to finish the game in relief.

Up Next: CIU travels to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on Trinity College of Jacksonville tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 28th, for a doubleheader starting at 1 P.M. EST.
