COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia International University Athletics has selected former track and field standout John-Hunter James and former Director of Athletics Darren Richie as its next Hall of Fame honorees.
James and Richie will be inducted posthumously on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m. ET in Hoke Auditorium during CIU's homecoming weekend. The ceremony will recognize two individuals whose accomplishments and commitment to Christ left a lasting impact on the Rams.
An Irmo native and Dutch Fork High School graduate, James made history as CIU's first NAIA national champion and first NAIA All-American in any sport. He won the 2020 NAIA indoor pole vault championship as a freshman, clearing 5.20 meters, before defending his title in 2021 with a height of 5.25 meters. His achievements helped establish both CIU Athletics and CIU track and field on the national stage.
Beyond competition, James was known for his work ethic, love for Jesus, and care for others. He prayed with teammates and competitors before meets and exemplified CIU's mission through his relationships and approach to athletics. A senior business major, James died March 6, 2023, in an automobile accident. CIU continues to honor his legacy through its annual John-Hunter Classic track meet.
Richie became the third director of athletics in CIU history in 2020 and guided the department through a period of significant growth. Under his leadership, the Rams captured three NCCAA national championships, won Appalachian Athletic Conference titles, and reached NAIA national championship tournaments in multiple sports. He also helped spearhead a $500,000 fundraising campaign to add stadium lights to CIU's baseball and softball fields.
Richie's vision extended beyond athletic achievement. He established a student-athlete retreat, initiated a coaches' Bible study and supported team chaplaincy, Fellowship of Christian Athletes involvement, and mission opportunities. His commitment to using athletics to develop young people in their faith remained central to his leadership.
In recognition of his career in Christian college athletics, Richie was inducted into the NCCAA Hall of Fame in 2023. He died Dec. 2, 2023, while in Florida supporting the CIU women's soccer team at the NCCAA national tournament.
The Nov. 7 induction ceremony will celebrate James' and Richie's enduring contributions to CIU Athletics and the lives they touched as members of the CIU community. All are welcome to attend.
