WEST POINT, GA. - Following a schedule change prompted by approaching winter weather, CIU traveled to Point University (Ga.) for a four-game series of seven-inning games. The Rams were held scoreless in a tight 3–0 loss in game one on Thursday and were unable to generate consistent offense in an 8–2 setback in game two.
Game One: Point 3 CIU 0: Point took an early lead, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first frame. The Rams threatened to score with two runners on in the top of the fourth, but a double play ended their scoring threat. The Skyhawks responded to this with two more runs in the bottom of the inning (3-0). Manuel Geisel held Point scoreless for the remainder of the contest; however, the Rams produced just one hit in their final three plate appearances to fall in game one.
Kai Smith and Jennings Greene both recorded a hit, with Smith also reaching on a walk. On the mound, Geisel struck out three.
Game Two: Point 8 CIU 2: The Rams rebounded quickly and took the field for game two. A two-out double in the first inning from Corbin Wright put two runners in scoring position, but a diving catch from the Skyhawks kept CIU off the board. Point took the lead in the bottom of the third with a three-run homer and added more in the fourth and fifth to lead 8-0. CIU did not go down without a fight, scoring two with a two-out double from Brant Badeaux before the end of the contest.
Wright and Badeaux recorded the two hits for CIU, with Badeaux picking up the only RBIs. The Rams' pitching staff totaled five strikeouts, and Alex Wiltz led with three. Michael Meilinger picked off two runners on the mound.
Up Next: The Rams close out the series against the Skyhawks with another doubleheader tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 29, beginning at 1 PM.
