MILL SPRING, N.C. — CIU men's and women's track & field competed Friday and Saturday at the Tryon Winter Classic and Combined Events at Tryon International, turning in a full slate of performances across sprints, middle distance races and field events as the indoor season continued.
The CIU men were led by Cameron Montgomery in the throws, as he placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 15.19 meters and finished 14th in the weight throw at 14.97 meters. Dante Shuler added marks of 12.97 meters in the weight throw and 12.65 meters in the shot put, while Bryce Scarborough recorded a throw of 12.29 meters in the weight throw. Casey Feaster posted marks of 11.05 meters in the weight throw and 10.00 meters in the shot put, with Hunter McCaskill adding a 10.51-meter effort in the shot put.
In the jumps, Dallas Turner finished eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.90 meters, while Donavan Latimer placed 10th in the triple jump at 13.19 meters.
CIU's sprinters and middle-distance runners were active throughout the weekend. James Mayo paced the Rams in the 60 meters with a time of 7.08, while Turner and McCaskill followed in 7.51 and 7.55, respectively. In the 200 meters, Mayo clocked a 22.80, with Turner finishing in 24.09. The Rams posted strong efforts in the 400 meters as Mark Zagata ran 54.68 and Mayo followed closely in 54.71.
Julian Carranza represented CIU in the 600 meters, finishing in 1:29.40. In the mile, Jacobo Garcia-Rivera led the Rams with a time of 4:47.85, while Joey Canning crossed the line in 4:59.66. CIU also competed in the distance medley relay, recording a time of 11:39.73. The men's 4×400 relay team of Mayo, Latimer, Turner and McCaskill finished in 3:33.29.
On the women's side, CIU was led by strong middle-distance performances in the 600 meters, where Morgan Hartman ran 1:48.73 and Elizabeth Gustafson followed in 1:49.27. Jordan Wray posted a time of 2:01.86 in the event. Gustafson also competed in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:36.74.
In the sprints, Zyra Spann recorded a time of 8.58 in the 60 meters. Arion Jefferson led the Rams in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.58, while Wray followed in 1:12.65. Jefferson also competed in the 200 meters, clocking a 28.11, with Michaela Oglesby finishing in 28.53 and Spann crossing in 29.64.
CIU will continue its indoor season at the Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va., on Jan. 23–24.
