CIU controls game from start to finish in win over Union Commonwealth

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — CIU men's basketball earned an Appalachian Athletic Conference road victory Saturday evening, defeating Union Commonwealth University 83–75.

CIU set the tone early, shooting 62 percent in the first half and building a 43–35 halftime lead. The Rams maintained control throughout the second half, answering each Union Commonwealth push with timely baskets and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch. CIU went a perfect 13-for-13 at the foul line for the game, including 11-for-11 in the second half.

Jeffrey Clark, II led CIU with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, adding six rebounds and three steals. JJ Vaughan followed with 21 points off the bench, knocking down five three-pointers and providing a spark throughout the contest. Will Kelly added 14 points and four assists, while James Davis chipped in 13 points and five assists.

Johnny Whysong contributed a well-rounded performance with 10 points, six rebounds, nine assists, and two blocks, helping facilitate CIU's offense. The Rams finished with 25 assists on 31 made field goals and shot 52.5 percent from the field.

CIU built its largest lead of 16 midway through the second half and closed the game at the free-throw line to secure the road win.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, traveling to face Montreat College at 7:30 p.m. ET.
