MONTREAT, N.C. — CIU men's basketball saw a second-half surge by Montreat prove decisive Wednesday evening, as the Rams dropped an 82–73 decision at McAlister Gymnasium in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
The Rams were locked in a tight battle early, as the teams were tied 33–33 at halftime. CIU took its largest lead of the game early in the second half, but Montreat responded with efficient perimeter shooting and a late run to pull away down the stretch. The Cavaliers outscored CIU 49–40 in the second half to secure the home win.
Jeffrey Clark, II and Connor Higgins paced CIU with 16 points apiece. Higgins also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, finishing with a double-double. Johnny Whysong added 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Will Kelly contributed 12 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. James Davis finished with six points and four rebounds, and JJ Vaughan added six points off the bench.
CIU finished with 38 points in the paint and held a 49–32 rebounding advantage, including 24 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points. However, Montreat connected on 11 three-pointers in the second half to create separation late.
The Rams return home for their next contest on Saturday, Jan. 17, hosting Tennessee Wesleyan University at 4:00 p.m. ET inside the Moore Fitness Center.
