COLUMBIA, S.C. — After a two-hour weather delay, CIU women's soccer opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play with a 1-0 victory over Brenau (Ga.) on Saturday night at Sessions Field.
The Rams (3-1, 1-0 AAC) broke through early in the second half when senior forward Lohrane Boaventura set up Nicole Matijow, who finished in the 48th minute for her first goal of the season. That tally proved to be the difference as CIU secured its third win.
Brenau pushed forward with 10 shots, but goalkeeper Hailey Resetar and the Rams' back line stood firm. Resetar collected five saves, including three in a busy stretch midway through the second half, to record her second clean sheet of the year.
Offensively, CIU created 12 shots with four on goal. Boaventura paced the attack with four attempts, while Callie Rowe and Alexa Thoman also applied pressure. Gabriella Hlaca came off the bench to add a shot on frame in the second half.
The win marks CIU's first AAC victory of the season, setting the tone for conference play.
The Rams now turn their attention to a road matchup at Spartanburg Methodist on Wednesday, Sept. 10, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
