COLUMBIA - CIU commenced its participation in the NCCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, held at their home venue for the third consecutive year.
Senior Deandre Leith delivered a first-place performance for the Rams in the Men's Discus Throw, achieving a distance of 50.62m, his farthest throw in his career at the NCCAA Outdoor Championships. Leith has won the discus an impressive four straight years at the championships. Elijah Seawright competed in the Men's High Jump with a leap of 1.85m. Jeremy Daniels recorded a distance of 43.17m in the Men's Javelin Throw, and Donavan Latimer posted a mark of 6.17m in the Men's Long Jump.
In the preliminary races, freshman Qamari Govan clocked 11.06 (11.054) in the Men's 100m and competed in the Men's 200m (22.53). Sophomore Denim Jones ran the Men's 200m prelims in 23.18, while senior Kevin Cunningham completed the same race in 23.98. The CIU Men's 4 x 800m relay team, comprising Julian Carranza, Spencer Evans, Jacobo Garcia-Rivera, and Malik Beaver, finished with a time of 8:28.57, setting a school record.
The Rams will wrap up competition at the national meet on Friday.
