Thompson's sixth-inning home run sinks Koalas to open AAC Tournament action

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Isabella Daivs diced up Columbia College (S.C.) on the mound, and Caydon Thompson provided the offensive firepower as CIU softball picked up their first-ever Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament win, holding off the No. 9 seeded Koalas 2-0. The Rams will move to the next round of the double-elimination tournament in possession of a 25-24 overall record.

Game Summary: A pitching duel ensued from the start of the game as Davis held the Koala's offense at bay while both teams struggled to push across a run. Columbia's best offensive effort came in the second inning when they recorded two hits. However, Thompson would turn the tide of the game in the sixth on a two-run home run, scoring the game's only runs. Davis stayed stalwart on the mound to close the game out as the Rams held on for the win.

Box Score Notes:

  • Abigail Guthrie notched a triple while Alexuz Barnes and Dallas Mayers each tallied a hit.
  • Thompson's home run is her fifth of the year.
  • Davis tossed the shutout, striking out six batters and giving up just four hits.

Up Next: The Rams face No. 1 seeded Reinhardt (Ga.), tomorrow, Tuesday, April. 29 in Kingsport.
