Rams take two from Paine for Senior Day sweep

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU softball (21-23) hit the field to take on Paine College (Ga.) for a non-conference Saturday matchup to celebrate Senior Day. The Rams took game one in walk-off fashion before powering through game two with a strong offensive showing to finish the regular season .500 for the best finish in program history.

Game One: CIU 6 Paine 5: The first three and a half innings were a pitchers' duel, with both teams struggling to push runners across home plate. The Rams plated their first run on a Lions' error after a Caydon Thompson double. Paine bounced back quickly and scored five runs on four hits and an error to lead 5-1 in the fifth. Raleigh Stewart recorded an RBI to scratch another for CIU, but a Thompson three-run homer tied the game 5-5. Neither team produced a run in the sixth, and Paine threatened in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the threat. A lead-off walk to Thompson set Macey Drye up for a walk-off single to take game one.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Thompson was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI.

  • Drye and Sophia Noriega also recorded two hits.

  • Abby Ragan recorded her eighth win of the season with four strikeouts and no hits in 2.0 IP.

  • Lilli Petty caught three runners stealing for the second time in her career.

Game Two: CIU 10 Paine 4: The Lions rebounded quickly and scored three runs in the top of the first off three hits. The Rams scratched one with an RBI single from Kaitlyn Elko to trail 3-1. An RBI single from Megan Stolzenbach in the second pushed another run across to bring the Rams within one. CIU took the lead in the third after scoring four runs with RBIs from Thompson, Mayers, and Lauren Arender. Paine added a run in the top of the fourth after a few defensive miscues for CIU, but the Rams matched this with a sac fly from Drye. CIU added three in the sixth after a passed ball, an RBI triple from Thompson, and another sac fly from Drye.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Elko was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3.

  • Stolzenbach notched two hits, with Thompson and Drye recording two RBI.

  • Stewart won her fourth game of the season with six strikeouts in 5.0 IP.

Up Next: The Rams head to Kingsport, Tenn., on Monday, April 28, for the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament to take on Columbia College (S.C.) at 11 a.m. EST.
