KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - CIU softball (19-21, 12-12 AAC) hit the road to face (RV) Johnson University on Thursday afternoon. Despite outhitting the Royals (22-9, 17-5 AAC) in both games, the Rams came up just short in each, falling in a pair of close contests to drop the series.
Game One: Johnson 3 CIU 1: Neither team managed to bring runners home in the opening two innings, but the Royals broke through in the bottom of the third, plating two runs on three hits. The Rams looked poised to respond in the top of the fourth after back-to-back singles from Lilli Petty and Macey Drye, followed by a walk to Carmella Korte to load the bases. However, a flyout ended the threat with all runners left stranded. Johnson tacked on another run in the bottom half to make it 3-0. CIU broke through in the fifth, as a single from Caydon Thompson scored Abigail Guthrie to cut into the deficit. The Rams continued to fight in the seventh, with singles from Noriega and Guthrie, but were unable to capitalize as the comeback bid fell short.
