ATLANTA, Ga. - CIU men's track and field competed against schools across all levels of NCAA and NAIA at the Emory Spring Break Classic, hosted by Emory University. The Rams competed in multiple events across sprints, distance, relays, jumps, and throws, with multiple AAC qualifiers.
Qamari Govan led the sprints with an 11.31 in the 100m and a 23.48 in the 200m, where Chance Guthrie (23.81), Hunter McCaskill (23.97), and Kevin Cunningham (24.43) also competed. In the 400m, Denim Jones and Spencer Evans clocked in at 53.01 and 53.66, respectively.
The mid-distance events saw Malik Beaver finish the 800m in 2:04.47, while Cunningham crossed the line at 2:26.86. Joey Canning ran a 4:34.99 in the 1500m and later returned for the 5000m at 17:18.45, joined by Jacobo Garcia-Rivera, who ran a strong 16:55.39. In the 3000m, Gavin Barfield finished in 10:44.41.
The relay teams had solid performances, with the 4x200m squad (Jones, Govan, Guthrie, and Julian Carranza) finishing in 1:32.72 and the 4x400m team (Jones, Guthrie, Carranza, and Beaver) posting 3:32.92. The 4x800m squad (Beaver, Garcia-Rivera, Evans, and Carranza) crossed the line in 8:53.36.
In the field events, Nicholas Ortiz cleared 3.85m (AAC) in the pole vault, and McCaskill reached 3.70m (AAC). Govan also excelled in the long jump, recording a 6.28m (AAC) leap.
Deandre Leith had a standout day in the throws, finishing third in the shot put (15.11m, AAC) and placing 12th in the discus (41.09m, AAC). Bryce Scarborough contributed in multiple events, throwing 10.36m in the shot put, 35.12m (AAC) in the discus, and 39.93m (AAC) in the hammer. Colton Buchanan threw 10.87m (PR) in the shot put and 33.20m in the hammer, while Jeremy Daniels threw 42.73m (AAC) in the javelin.
