Qamari Govan sprints for CIU

Track & Field takes short trip down I-26 for CSU Buc Open

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — The CIU track and field teams recorded multiple top finishes and personal records at the CSU BUC Open hosted by Charleston Southern on Friday. Multiple CIU athletes beat out NCAA DI opponents in their respective events.

Donavan Latimer led the Rams with a first-place finish in the men's triple jump with a mark of 12.99 meters and also placed fourth in the men's long jump at 6.28 meters. Qamari Govan took third in the men's 100 meters, clocking in at 11.33 seconds. In the men's 400 meters, Malik Beaver finished third with a personal record of 53.00 seconds, and Kevin Cunningham was sixth at 55.89 seconds. Mercy Berkemeyer placed fourth in the women's 400 meters with a time of 1:04.73. Spencer Evans finished eighth in the men's 800 meters with a time of 2:08.08, while Jacobo Garcia-Rivera was ninth with a personal best of 2:14.54. Elizabeth Gustafson secured third place in the women's 800 meters at 2:34.37. Joey Canning ran a personal record of 4:28.69 in the men's 1500 meters, finishing 14th.

In the throwing events, Deandre Leith claimed fourth in the men's discus throw with a mark of 43.54 meters, and Bryce Scarborough was ninth at 35.78 meters. For the women, Acoya Hunt finished fourth in the discus at 33.32 meters, followed by Lillian Grumbles in fifth at 32.93 meters, Janasia Day in seventh with a personal record of 32.50 meters, and Coral Curry in ninth at 31.99 meters. Scarborough also earned a personal record in the men's hammer throw, placing third with a distance of 43.09 meters, while Dante Shuler was sixth at 39.89 meters. Curry led the CIU women in the hammer throw, finishing second at 44.78 meters, with Kloey Pickens taking third at 42.13 meters. Hunt was seventh at 34.98 meters, Day eighth with a personal record of 34.28 meters, Grumbles ninth at 33.44 meters, and Hannah Grace Sparks tenth at 32.92 meters.

Jeremy Daniels threw a personal record of 47.31 meters to finish fifth in the men's javelin throw. Pickens also placed fourth in the women's javelin with a mark of 35.19 meters, followed by Bethany Rymer in sixth at 28.15 meters and Olivia Tanchak in seventh with a personal record of 16.68 meters. In the men's shot put, Leith finished third with a mark of 15.82 meters, Shuler recorded a personal record for seventh at 12.05 meters, Scarborough was eighth at 11.64 meters, and Colton Buchanan placed ninth at 10.16 meters. Pickens took third in the women's shot put with a mark of 12.12 meters, while Curry recorded a personal record for fifth at 11.55 meters, and Hunt finished seventh at 10.94 meters.
