Rams square-off with St. Thomas in first-ever softball matchup

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - The Rams headed to the Sunshine State on Thursday to kick off a six-game stretch against St. Thomas University and Ave Maria University. CIU took on St. Thomas in a doubleheader this evening and narrowly fell in both games. The Rams are now 6-4 on the season.

Game One: STU 3 CIU 0: The Bobcats took the lead in the first frame with one run and added another in the second. The Rams threatened to score in the top of the third after a single from Macey Drye loaded the bases, but a play at the plate ended the threat. St. Thomas scored another in the fourth to lead 3-0. Another single from Drye, followed by a single from Mia Johnson, put runners in scoring position in the sixth inning for the Rams, but a groundout prevented any scoring chances. Isabella Davis held the Bobcats scoreless in the last two frames, but CIU could not get their offense going to get on the board.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Drye and Megan Stolzenbach led the team with two hits.

  • Caydon Thompson, Mackenzie  Brown, and Johnson also recorded a hit.

  • Davis surrendered just six hits in six innings pitched.

Game Two: STU 3 CIU 2: The Rams got on the board in the first frame after Stolzenbach took advantage of a Bobcat error to cross home plate. They extended their lead 2-0 on an RBI double from Stolzenbach to score Dallas Mayers. Abby Ragan kept St. Thomas off the board until the fifth inning, when they scratched two to even the score. The Rams went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, which allowed the Bobcats to walk the game off in the bottom of the seventh.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Stolzenbach led the team with two hits, totaling four on the day, with the Rams' only RBI.

  • Mayers also notched a hit in game two.

  • CIU's defense recorded their first double play of the season.

Up Next: The Rams take on Ave Maria tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 21, at 2 and 4 p.m. EST.
