WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - On Friday afternoon, CIU softball took on Salem College (NCAA DIII) for the first time in program history. The Rams (6-2) wasted no time in game one, winning 11-1 in five innings, but the Spirits (0-2) battled in game two, but CIU proved resilient for the 8-4 win. After two wins on Monday, the Rams went 4-0 on the week with two non-conference sweeps.
Game One: CIU 11 Salem 1: The Rams took a quick lead in the first inning, scoring four runs off three hits, including home runs from Caydon Thompson and Abby Ragan. CIU added two more in the second with RBI hits from Macey Drye and Thompson to lead 6-0. In the top of the third, Carmella Korte pushed two runs across on a single to center field to extend the Rams' lead to 8-0. Salem struck in the bottom of the third to get on the board, but the Rams took advantage of three Spirits' miscues and two hits to push ahead 11-1 in the fourth and come within run-rule territory. Two strikeouts and a pop-up from Raleigh Stewart in the bottom of the fifth ended the game in favor of CIU.

Game Two: CIU 8 Salem 4: An RBI-double and two-run homerun from Mackenzie Brown in the first and third innings put the Rams ahead 3-0. However, Salem took the lead in the bottom of the third after scoring four runs. This lead was shortlived as Sophia Noriega and Thompson singled in the fourth to score three runs and put CIU ahead 6-4. The Rams pushed two more across in the sixth with singles from Noriega and Brown to extend their lead 8-4. Isabella Davis and Sarah Dority allowed just one hit in the final two frames from the Spirits to secure the sweep.
