Rams sweep Tigers in ten innings to start the week

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Due to incoming rainy weather, CIU softball took the field on Monday afternoon to take on Voorhees College (S.C.) for an early week doubleheader. In an excellent offensive outing, the Rams needed just ten innings to get past the Tigers in a 9-1 and 15-0 sweep. CIU is now 4-2 on the season.

Game One: CIU 9 Voorhees 1: The Tigers threatened to score in the first frame after a walk and a hit, but Raleigh Stewart struck out the next three batters to end the inning. The Rams quickly took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first after five hits, including a lead-off triple from Sarah Dority. CIU went scoreless in the second but added another in the third to lead 4-0. The fourth inning was another big inning for the Rams, adding three runs on two hits and two errors. The Tigers scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to prevent the five-inning run-rule.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Stewart led the Rams with two hits and a season-high nine strikeouts.

  • Kaitlyn Elko led the team with two RBI.

  • Collectively, the Rams stole four bases for a new season-high.

Game Two: CIU 15 Voorhees 0: The Rams' bats picked up where they left off in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning, highlighted by another Dority triple. CIU scored three in the second off an in-the-park homer from Dority and four in the third to lead 11-0. In their final at-bat of the day, the Rams added four more runs thanks to a three-RBI triple from Macey Drye and a single from Caydon Thompson. Miranda Fulmer entered the circle in the top of the fifth and struck out the side to end the game.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Drye, Thompson, Dority, and Stewart all recorded two hits.

  • Dority led the team with five RBI, while Drye and Thompson collected three each.

  • Fulmer and Dority combined for one hit and no runs in five innings of work.

Up Next: The Rams hit the road to take on Salem College on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 2 & 4 p.m. EST. Depending on incoming winter weather in Winston-Salem, N.C., these games may get moved to Friday, Feb. 14.
