Baseball sweeps Florida National to go 4-0 on the weekend

HIALEAH, FLA. - For the first time in program history, CIU baseball kicks off their season with a 4-0 record after taking games three and four against Florida National. The Rams' bats stayed hot from Friday's games and combined for 28 hits in Saturday's contests. These wins mark the first time in program history that CIU has swept their season opener.

Game Three: CIU 14 FNU 2: The Rams took advantage of one hit, one error, and a wild pitch to score four runs in the top of the first, but FNU cut their lead in half after four hits in the bottom of the frame (4-2). CIU added four more runs in the second off of five hits, including an RBI double from Daniel Sidoti. Neither team scored again until Maurice Gomez homered in the fourth to extend the Rams' lead to 9-2. An RBI single from David Mora, a three-run homer from Bradley Garland, and a sac fly from Mason Turner added five more runs for the Rams to enter the bottom of the fifth, leading 14-2. Drake Thames, Hunter Cherry, and Matthew Garris held the Conquistadors scoreless for the remainder of the game to take game three.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Gomez was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homerun.

  • Garland, Turner, and Graham Peeler led the team with three RBI each.

  • Noah Davis picked up his first win of the season, going three innings with three strikeouts.

  • Thames, Cherry, and Garris combined for one hit and no runs to close the game.

Game Four: CIU 19 FNU 5: CIU scored five runs in the top of the first after four hits, including a two-RBI single from Colton Lopez and a two-RBI double from Brandon Arnold. Both teams went quiet for the next two frames, but a two-run homer from Turner in the fourth extended the Rams' lead to 7-4. The Conquistadors responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning after five hits and an error. A Garland single pushed two more across in the 6th, but a 9-4 lead was not enough for the Rams. In their last plate appearances of the weekend, CIU scored nine runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Gomez, to lead 18-4. Connor Kirkley struck out three batters in the bottom of the inning to close out the game and secure game four.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Five Rams recorded two hits, with Garland and Turner recording three RBI.

  • CIU went 5-5 on stolen base attempts.

  • Darius Hatchette-Dunn got the win with two strikeouts, while the closer Kirkley recorded eight strikeouts in three innings.

Up Next: The Rams are back in Florida next weekend, Feb. 6-8, for a four-game series against Keiser University.
