COLUMBIA, S.C. — CIU men's soccer battled through 100 scoreless minutes before delivering a golden-goal victory to claim thi first NCCAA South Region Championship in program history, defeating Carolina University 1–0 on Thursday evening.
The Rams sealed the title in the second overtime when forward Ian Rau headed home the decisive golden goal off a service from Ive Celic at the 100:51 mark. The play capped a gritty defensive performance and sent the CIU sideline into celebration as the team secured its first regional crown since joining the NCCAA postseason field.
Goalkeeper Vasilios Diakomihalis anchored the Rams defensively, recording eight and keeping Carolina off the scoreboard despite sustained pressure, especially late in regulation. Diakomihalis' composure helped CIU withstand 17 shots and seven corner kicks.
Offensively, CIU generated 11 shots, with Celic threatening throughout the match and assisting on the game-winner after three shots on goal of his own. Rau led the Rams with four shots, including the championship-clinching finish.
The match featured a physical battle in the midfield as CIU absorbed early pressure, grew into the game, and created momentum through the second half and overtime.
With the victory, CIU captures the South Region title and advances to the NCAA National Championship in Kissimmee, Fla. Pool play begins on Monday, Dec 1.
