WINSTON-SALEM -
After being unable to travel due to hazardous conditions last weekend, CIU men's track & field competed in their first indoor meet of 2025 on Saturday. Both veterans and newcomers alike found success as the Rams traveled to the Mondo College Invite at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Track Performances:
The men's 60-meter qualifying rounds featured several Rams; freshman Qamari Govan posted a time of 7.34 seconds, while freshman Chance Guthrie ran a time of 7.38, and senior Kevin Cunningham clocked in at 7.77 seconds.
In the men's 200 meters, Guthrie ran a 23.59 and was paced by teammate Denim Jones, who crossed the finish line at 24.10 seconds. Cunningham also competed with a time of 24.43.
Multiple CIU athletes represented in the 400 meters; Jones ran 54.40 seconds to finish 15th in the seeded section. In the open 400 meters, sophomore Julian Carranza posted a time of 55.04 seconds as Cunningham rounded out his day with a time of 56.32 in the event.
Junior Spencer Evans ran a time of 2:09.51 in the men's 800 meters, as CIU also saw its distance squad participate in other events. In the men's 1-mile, freshman Jacobo Garcia-Rivera clocked 4:56.45, while Evans took part as well with a time of 5:06.49. Fellow distance runner Joey Canning battled his way to a time of 9:58.45 in the 3000 meters.
Field Performances:
In the long jump, Elijah Seawright recorded a jump of 6.44 meters, placing fifth overall. Govan also had a solid performance, jumping 6.17 meters, which earned him a 12th-place finish.
A CIU newcomer displayed his talents in the pole vault, as sophomore Nicolas Ortiz cleared 3.70 meters to finish 5th overall among a formidable field of NCAA DI & DII competition.
In the shot put, junior Bryce Scarborough threw 10.80 meters while Colton Buchanan heaved the shot put 10.14 meters.
Scarborough had a throw of 12.76 meters in the weight throw. Buchanan represented the Rams in the event with a toss of 10.77 meters.
Up Next: The Rams will head to the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Va. the weekend of Jan. 24-25.
