Last minute goal hands CIU first loss of 2024

DALTON, Ga. - Following a season-opening win on Saturday, CIU men's soccer hit the road to take on Georgia Gwinnett College on Thursday evening in a neutral site showdown. The Rams went down in the first half but tied the game quickly into the second. A late goal for the Grizzlies gave them the 3-2 advantage. CIU is now 1-1 on the season.

Match Summary: The Rams remained on their defensive end for most of the first half. The Grizzlies took two shots less than four minutes into the contest and then picked up back-to-back goals five minutes later. CIU took a corner kick at 16' but could not capitalize on this. Bryan Molina took the first shot for the Rams, but the Grizzlies keeper blocked the attempt. Rodrigo Cercal and Ive Celic took shots that were just slightly off target shortly before Matias Breit picked up a save. Breit and the team saved two more shots to keep the score 2-0 heading into intermission.

Quickly into the second half, Victor Gonzalez found the back of the net to cut the Grizzlies lead in half (49'). Ten minutes later, Cercal tied the game 2-2. Both teams continued to fire off shots, but neither could get it past the keepers. The contest appeared to be nearing a draw, but the Grizzlies snuck one past the Rams in the final minute to win 3-2.

Cercal scored his third goal of the season, while Gonzalez notched his first.

Up Next: The Rams are back on the road to take on No. 5  Dalton State College on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1:30 PM.
