Rams use extra innings to get past Cavaliers in game two

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU took the field on Tuesday night for an important Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Montreat College (N.C.). The Rams struggled to move runners around in the first game, falling 5-3. They battled back and took game two in eight innings to split the series against the Cavaliers. CIU is now 12-24 overall and 3-17 in conference play.

Game One: Montreat 5 CIU 3: Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, but the Rams struck in the bottom of the second off a Cavaliers' error to score Hannah Murphy. Montreat responded with a three-run homer to take a 3-1 lead. CIU went scoreless for the next two innings, and the Cavaliers added two more in the top of the fifth to lead 5-1 heading into the sixth inning. Caydon Thompson tacked on another for the Rams with a solo shot in the sixth to bring CIU within three with one frame left in the contest. An RBI single from Carmella Korte cut Montreats' lead down to two with two Rams' runners on the bases; however, two groundouts would end the game in favor of the visiting team.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Lilli Petty led the team with two hits.

  • Thompson hit her third home run of the season.

  • Jada Cox struck out four in 7.0 innings of work.

Game Two: CIU 3 Montreat 2: Montreat threatened to score with bases loaded in the top of the first, but a flyout got the Rams out of the jam. CIU moved runners into scoring position in the first four innings but could not push a run across the board. The Cavaliers pushed one across in the fourth and the sixth to take the lead. Ally Clapp hit a triple in the bottom of the sixth to score Dallas Mayers, and then Clapp scored on a passed ball to tie the game 2-2 heading into the final inning. Petty threw a runner out at second for a huge momentum shift and a flyout prevented Montreat from taking the lead. CIU could not score in the seventh to force extra innings. Ally Clapp and Margaret Schubert singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, and an RBI single from Korte walked off the game to get the Rams back in the win column.
