Rams trump Allen in capital city clash

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After a walk-off win on Tuesday night, CIU softball hit the field to host Allen University (S.C.) for a midweek doubleheader. CIU outscored Allen 19-1 between the two games to secure the sweep over the NCAA Division II team. CIU is now 14-24 overall and holds a 5-1 all-time record over Allen.

Game One: CIU 8 Allen 1: CIU batted through their lineup in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead, highlighted by RBI hits from Ally Clapp and Macey Drye. Caydon Thompson doubled in the second to push across two more runs to give the Rams a 7-0 lead. Both teams went quiet in the third, and the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a Rams error to get themselves on the board. A Scarlett Traver single added another in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-1. The Rams held Allen scoreless for the final two frames to secure the 8-1 win.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Sadie Johnson had a career day in the circle with nine strikeouts.

  • Clapp was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI.

  • Four runners recorded a stolen base to tie their season high.

Game Two: CIU 11 Allen 0: The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the first and second innings, but the Rams' defense worked out of the jam and kept them off the board. Drye and Carmella Korte pushed runs across in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Rams' offense came alive in the third after scoring five runs, highlighted by a Megan Stolzenbach double. CIU tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to sit comfortably in run-rule territory at 11-0. Allen threatened with two back-to-back singles, but three consecutive outs from Sydnee Dial secured the five-inning win.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Four players recorded two hits for the Rams: Stolzenbach, Thompson, Clapp, and Drye.

  • Korte led with a season-high of four RBI.
