Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU took the field for the last regular season series of 2024 on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader against Milligan University (Tenn.). The Rams were coming off a nine-game win streak and extended this to ten after taking game one, but ultimately fell in game two. CIU finished the regular season 21-25 and 10-18 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play.

Game One: CIU 11 MU 10: Milligan quickly took a four-run lead from five hits in the first frame. CIU scratched one at the bottom of the inning but took the lead after Shannon Patton drove three runs in the second. The Buffs responded in the top of the third with five runs to lead 9-5. Doubles from Hannah Murphy and Dallas Mayers and singles from Lilli Petty and Ally Clapp tied the game 9-9 in the bottom of the fourth. The Rams took the lead after a two-RBI double from Caydon Thompson. Milligan tacked on one run in the top of the seventh, but a pop-up and strikeout gave game one to the Rams.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Thompson and Petty were perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 and 3-for-3, respectively.

  • Megan Stolzenbach also recorded three hits and Patton led with three RBI.

  • Jada Cox picked up the win, surrendering two hits over 4.0 innings of work.

Game Two: MU 11 CIU 6: Milligan scored one in the second and the third to lead 2-0. Carmella Korte, Thompson, and Dallas Mayers drove in runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Buffs responded with four runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 6-3. A single from Mayers brought the Rams within two, but Milligan pulled away with five in the top of the sixth. Korte doubled in the bottom of the frame to score Clapp, but the Rams trailed by six heading into the final frame. Sadie Johnson held the Buffs scoreless in the seventh, and Josie Self scored one on a pinch-hit double, but that is all the Rams could push across to split the series.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Korte led the team with three hits, while Stolzenbach, Murphy, and Mayers recorded two.

  • Korte and Mayers recorded two RBI each.

  • Johnson closed out the game and gave up just two hits in 1.1 innings of work.

What Coach Allen is saying: Even though we didn't make the postseason, I'm really proud that Team Six did everything right. We had a lot of heartbreaking games early on but they never gave up on what we knew we could do. For being so young we showed a lot of heart and competitiveness to continuously improve. This team has so much class, character, and goodness. They were truly a delight to be around every day!"
