CIU falls short against Columbia (S.C.) despite late rally in both games

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU took the field for a midweek matchup against crosstown rival Columbia College (S.C.) in a crucial Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest. The Rams were within reach of a comeback in both games, but came up short to fall 0-2 in the series. Their overall record is now 11-21 and 2-14 in conference play.

Game One: CC 2 CIU 1: Carmella Korte led off the first inning with a single, but she was left stranded on second. The Koalas homered in the second to take a 1-0 lead. The Rams threatened after Ally Clapp singled and stole second, but a ground out and pop-up kept them off the board. Columbia added another in the fifth with a two-out double to extend their lead to 2-0. Macey Drye and Megan Stolzenbach singled in the sixth and moved into scoring position, but a flyout ended the scoring threat, and they trailed 2-0 heading into the final frame. Lilli Petty led off the seventh with a single, followed by a Hannah Murphy double, which put two runners in scoring position with one out. Clapp's ground ball scored a run to bring the score to 2-1 with runners on the corners. A pop fly turned double play ended the Rams' chance of tying to force extra innings or a walk-off.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Six players secured a hit, with Clapp notching the only RBI.

  • Miranda Fulmer went the distance and struck out eight batters.

  • Murphy recorded the only extra-base hit for the Rams.

Game Two: CC 7 CI 5: The Koalas took a quick lead after scoring two in the first inning off of three doubles and added another in the third. Drye and Carmella Korte hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the third to break up the no-hitter and advanced to second on a passed ball, but a flyout ended the inning with Columbia still leading 3-0. The Koalas tacked on three more in the top of the fourth, but Brenna Fasching answered with a two-RBI single to cut their lead to 6-2. Columbia threatened to score in the top of the sixth, but a 9-6-2 relay and a diving catch kept them off the board. Jada Cox and Clapp pushed two runners across in the bottom of the frame to bring the Rams within two (6-4). The Koalas added another in the seventh, and CIU quickly responded with a Stolzenbach triple, who scored on a throwing error (7-5). Caydon Thompson and Murphy found a way on base with one out to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. A pop-out and strikeout ended the seventh-inning rally to give Columbia the sweep.

Box Score Highlights

  • Murphy led the team with two hits.

  • The seven and eight-hole batters led the team, recording all of the RBI.

  • Three arms combined in the circle for eight strikeouts, with Cox leading with four.

Up Next: CIU is back on the road to take on No. 25 Reinhardt University (Ga.) on Friday, April 5, for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. EST.
