COLUMBIA - Overwatch Gold defeated University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on Tuesday, April 2nd in their first round of playoffs. After going undefeated in the regular season, Overwatch Gold seeded 11th for playoffs where they would be scheduled to play UTD, seeded 6th. In previous seasons, UTD had defeated CIU in playoffs but Spring 2024 was destined for change. The first "King of the Hill" map shook the team hard as they lost 2-1. Fearing a repeat of previous seasons, Overwatch Gold pulled out a wild card in terms of their character selection, and ran a team composition known in the Overwatch community as "Namekuji"; a team composition derived from a professional Japanese team whose renown is tethered to a gamble they once performed with atypical character selections. After some lengthy discussions about team comps prior to the game, the team decided the Namekuji composition would be a last resort if things looked grim. After the first map was lost, the Rams switched to Namekuji and the tables turned immediately. In a game about pitting various team compositions against each other in battles over territories and objectives, attacking with a cartoonishly collection of curated characters can put your opponent on their backfoot for long enough to seize the objectives; and this worked for the Rams a few consecutive times earning them the 3-1 win over UTD and a change to move into the second round of playoffs.
Good Overwatch players have learned to read the patch notes and forthcoming updates in the game they love. GREAT Overwatch players learn to synthesize that information and put it to use in strategic ways under pressure. Needless to say, UTD is a great team! However, when CIU Overwatch Gold pivoted to Namekuji, UTD struggled to respond. This is not a strategy that can be replayed over and over, but in terms of digging out a win against a consistently challenging opponent, CIU Overwatch Gold played their hand at the exact moment in which is was needed.
