BROOKINGS, S.D. - CIU track & field headed north to compete in the NAIA Indoor National Championships to close out the 2024 indoor season. On Friday, four track athletes competed in prelims, while two field athletes competed in prelims and finals. Only the top eight finishers move on to the finals for track events.
In the women's 60m prelims, Emma Johnson (7.64), Trinyty Gregory (7.66, PR), and Charlette Johnson (7.79) all recorded top 25 finishes. Emma Johnson also placed 13th in the 60m hurdle prelims (8.65) and 200m prelims (24.89, PR).
Dazanni Hinton and Kloey Pickens were the only field athletes competing for the women's team, both representing the Rams in the weight throw. Hinton recorded a distance of 16.49m, and Pickens checked in at 15.39m.
Dario Laing was the only athlete from the men's team to compete on Friday, qualifying for finals in the men's 60m hurdles after coming in 6th place with a time of 8.08.
What Coach Tim Thompson is saying, "NAIA nationals is no joke. This track meet requires excellence and allows room for the only smallest of errors. We had some amazing moments today. Trinyty reached her PR in the 60, Charlette was just off her PR, Emma ran a lifetime PR in the 200 after running two races today. Dario was super impressive as well making the finals of the 60-hurdles. Dazanni threw two solid throws after fouling all three in the meet last year. Kloey got a taste of national competition and is more hungry than ever for the outdoor season. We did our best, leaving nothing to chance! I am so proud of those that competed today. Some had mixed emotions about their performances, but nevertheless grateful for the opportunity to represent God. Tomorrow should be just as exciting!"
Up Next: Laing will compete tomorrow, March 2, in the men's 60m hurdles finals, while Deandre Leith and Cameron Montgomery will compete in the men's shot put.
