Rams nearly topple No. 18 Coastal Georgia in NAIA top-25 test

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - CIU softball was a half-inning away from their first-ever NAIA top-25 win Friday afternoon, but the game would slip from their grasp as they dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 18 Coastal Georgia. The Rams do not have a win against the Mariners in the all-time series between the teams. However, Coastal Georgia has held a significant home-field advantage, with ten of the 12 matchups being played in Brunswick.

Game 1: CG 3 CIU 2: Both teams struggled at the plate for the majority of game one. Rams' ace Miranda Fulmer diced up the Mariner's batting order, only allowing four hits through the six innings. With the Rams down one run entering the final inning, freshman Caydon Thompson would step up big with a two-RBI homer to surge the Rams ahead. However, the Mariners nearly equaled their hit total up to this point in the bottom of the seventh as they rattled off two runs to squeeze out the win.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Fulmer faced 30 batters, notching two strikeouts and yielding seven hits through seven innings.
  • Thompson, Josie Self, and Carmella Korte all recorded hits, with Thompson notching two RBIs on her seventh-inning blast.
  • Scarlett Traver was productive as a pinch runner, scoring a run and stealing a base.

Game 2: CG 13 CIU 2: After falling behind 12-0 through three innings, the Rams would start a fourth-inning rally on a Self single. After Lilli Petty reached on an error, Amya Fowler made a ball-to-bat connection, recording an RBI single to score Tristan Phillips. CIU got on the board for the final time in the top of the fifth as Korte singled, which set up a sac-fly for Megan Stolzenbach that scored pinch-runner Macey Drye

Box Score Highlights:

  • Both Self and Fowler went 1-for-1 at the plate, with Fowler notching the RBI.
  • Sadie Johnson was the Ram's most effective pitcher, giving up four hits and a run in 1.1 innings.

Up Next: The Rams travel to Macon, Ga., to play NCAA Division III opponent Wesleyan College tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 10, in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. EST.
