CIU and Keiser combine for 16 runs as Seahawks take first game of four-game series

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - CIU baseball headed to Florida to take on the Keiser University Seahawks for the third season in a row on Thursday. The Rams took an early lead off a Scott McDonough home run, but the Seahawks quickly pulled away to take game one of the four-game series.

Game 1

Keiser 10 CIU 6: McDonough gave the Rams their only lead of the game with a solo shot in the second inning. Keiser responded with a homer of their own to tie the game, but they added three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Rams threatened to push another run across in the top of the fifth after a Rafael Gonzales single and Colton Lopez double, but a flyout ended this threat. The Seahawks added four more off a three-run homer in the fifth and a solo homer in the sixth to pull away 8-1. Keiser pushed two more across at the bottom of the seventh, and CIU responded with two of their own after a two-RBI double from Aidan Pridgen at the top of the eighth. The Rams continued to battle into the top of the ninth as James Lovera went yard to tack on three more runs to bring the final score to 10-6.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Lopez, Graham Peeler, and Collin Greer led the team with two hits apiece. Seven other Rams tacked on one hit to match the Skyhawks' 13 hits.

  • McDonough and Lovera recorded their first four-bagger of the season.

  • The Rams' defense was perfect, with zero errors, while Michael Meilinger and Manuel Geisel combined for six strikeouts.

Up Next: The Rams take the field for a doubleheader tomorrow, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. for games two and three in the series against the Skyhawks.
