Baseball topples No. 6 Bulldogs for first AAC victory

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After losing game one of the series on Friday, CIU baseball had a quick turnaround with a doubleheader against No.6 Tennessee Wesleyan on Sunday. CIU dropped the first game of the DH by run rule but rebounded quickly to overwhelmingly win game three for their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) victory of the season. The win is CIU's first win versus an NAIA top-ten ranked opponent since 2022 when the Rams upended then No. 8 Keiser (Fla.).

Game Two: TWU 17 CIU 4: Both teams went scoreless in the first, but Shane Hammonds got the Rams on the board with a solo shot in the bottom of the second. Matthew Garris held the Bulldogs scoreless until the fourth when they hit a three-run homer to take a 3-1 lead. Tennessee Wesleyan added four more in the fifth, but CIU responded with two after a two-out double from James Lovera to cut the lead to 7-3. The Bulldogs continued to rally and added ten more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put them in run-rule territory. Despite a single from Lovera to plate another run, two strikeouts handed the Bulldogs another victory to go 2-0 in the series.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Lovera and Graham Peeler led the team with two hits.

  • Hammonds homered for the first time this season.

  • Colton Lopez recorded the sole stolen base for the Rams.

Game Three: CIU 14 TWU 5: Bouncing back from game one of the day, the Rams took the first lead of the game and scored three runs in the first inning off two doubles and a single. Deric Hanko held the Bulldogs hitless and scoreless until the fifth inning when they homered to cut the lead to 3-1. CIU exploded offensively in the bottom of the sixth, scoring 11 runs off of ten hits and an error to take a massive 14-1 lead before the final frame. The Bulldogs did not go down without a fight, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh to bring the final score to 14-6.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Lovera led the team with three hits and two RBI, while five other Rams notched two hits.

  • CIU recorded five extra-base hits.

  • Hanko picked up his first win of the season and struck out six batters in six innings.

What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying, "I couldn't be more proud of my guys. This has been an abnormally tough start to our season. Through it all, they haven't quit and continued to work hard to correct the little things that have cost us wins. It all came together against a very tough TW team. Beating a top-10 team the way we did today was a great reward for their attitude and effort during this tough stretch they have gone through. We must build on what we accomplished today and realize how good we can be when playing fundamentally sound baseball."

Up Next: CIU steps out of conference play to host Bob Jones University on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. EST.
