Three arms combine for shutout in face-off with Bruins

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Despite combining for 26 runs in their contest last week, CIU narrowly edged out NCCAA opponent Bob Jones University (S.C.) on Tuesday evening. The Rams are now 4-13 on the season and improve their all-time record against the Bruins to 7-1.

Game One: CIU 1 BJU 0: Both teams went scoreless in the first, but Bob Jones threatened in the second. A 6-4-3 double-play and a flyout ended that scoring threat, and CIU took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly from David Mora. The Bruins threatened again in the third until a JT Stanley strikeout ended the inning. The Rams turned a second double play in the top of the fourth to keep Bob Jones off the board. Rodrigo Rodriguez entered the game in the top of the sixth and sat the Bruins down in order to keep the lead 1-0. Bob Jones managed two runners on in the top of the eighth, but a strikeout from Collin Otte got the Rams out of the jam. Both teams would not get a runner past second base for the remainder of the contest for CIU to secure the 1-0 win.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Emmanuel Maldonado led the team with two hits, while three others notched one.

  • The Rams secured two 6-4-3 double plays to prevent the Bruins from scoring.

  • Stanley recorded his first win of the season with two strikeouts, while Otte picked up his first save with two strikeouts.

What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying, "A 1-0 win couldn't have been timed better, following a 14-6 win. Seeing the guys win the high-scoring and nail-biter in back-to-back wins gives me confidence in what this team is capable of for the rest of the season. We must take this momentum into a pivotal series as we head to Bluefield."

Up Next: The Rams are back on the road this weekend with a conference series against Bluefield University (Va.) on March 1-2.
