COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU welcomed No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan University on Friday night to kick off their second Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series and their first at home. The Bulldogs took an early lead and carried that momentum after a 90-minute rain delay to lead 13-4 in the final inning. The Rams showed comeback potential against the No. 6 team in the NAIA after loading the bases in the final inning, but base running miscues would end the game in favor of the Bulldogs.
Game One
TWU 13 CIU 5: Tennessee Wesleyan took the lead early in the game with three home runs in the first three innings for a 7-0 advantage. The Rams added three of their own, highlighted by a Shane Hammonds single to push two runs in. After the Bulldogs pushed four more runs across, CIU took advantage of a fielder's choice to score Kai Smith to cut the lead to 11-4. Rodrigo Rodriguez entered in the top of the sixth with bases loaded and one out, but a flyout and a strikeout would keep the Bulldogs scoreless for the first time in the contest. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh until Tennessee Wesleyan added another in the top of the eighth and ninth to take a 13-4 lead heading into the final inning. The Rams saw a string of pitch hitters enter the game when Austin Paradise hit a single up the middle to drive in a run before Jennings Greene walked to load the bases with one out. However, a double play ended the potential ninth-inning comeback for the Rams.
