Rams overpower NCCAA opponent Bob Jones in high-scoring affair

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Following tough losses in their conference opener against UPike, the Rams stepped out of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play to take on NCCAA opponent Bob Jones University. In a high-scoring affair, CIU collected their second victory with a 16-10 win over the Bruins. The Rams are now 2-11 on the season. 

Game Summary 

CIU 16 Bob Jones 10: The Rams took an early lead after scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and added another run in the second after a groundout from Emmanuel Maldonado pushed James Lovera across the plate. Bob Jones responded with three of their own in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 4-3. Both teams scored one in the third, but CIU added one in the fourth for a 6-4 lead. The Rams began to pull away in the fifth after scoring four runs, highlighted by a Graham Peeler double. The Bruins responded with two in the bottom of the sixth, but CIU answered with three in the top of the seventh after Tanner Martinez and Lovera picked up three RBI. Bob Jones tacked on another run in the eighth, but the Rams added three more runs to extend their lead to 16-7. Not going down without a fight, the Bruins scored three runs in the final inning, but a strikeout ended the comeback threat. 

Box Score Highlights: 

  • Lovera led the team with three hits, three RBIs, and four runs scored, while Maldonado collected two hits and three RBIs. 

  • The Rams combined for ten hits and 20 walks. 

  • Collin Otte and Rodrigo Rodriguez combined for 3.2 IP, allowed no earned runs, and struck out two batters a piece. Darius Hatchette-Dunn led the pitching staff with four strikeouts. 

Head coach Jonathan Johnson says, "The team took a step in the right direction tonight. We did a great job getting runners over and getting them in. Much improved disciplined at-bats from top to bottom."

Up Next: CIU heads back to Miller Field this weekend, Feb. 23-24, to host No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan starting at 4 p.m. EST on Friday.
