Fulmer's 11 strikeouts leads Softball in Benedict sweep

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Following a sweep against Wesleyan College (S.C.), CIU softball hosted Benedict College on Thursday and found themselves with a four-game win streak after a sweep of the NCAA DII opponent. CIU improves to 6-4 before Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play starts next weekend.

Game 1

CIU 4 Benedict 0: Both teams went scoreless in the first, but the Rams took the lead in the bottom of the second off an RBI single from Hallie Miller. CIU extended their lead after Dallas Mayers and Ally Clapp pushed two more runs across. Miranda Fulmer held the Tigers to no hits until the fifth inning, but this was their sole hit of the contest. The Rams tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth on a Caydon Thompson double to take a 4-0 lead. CIU then retired the next six batters from Benedict to take game one.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Clapp led the team with two hits, with seven others collecting a hit.

  • Thompson and Josie Self recorded a double, while Megan Stolzenbach and Sophia Noriega stole a base.

  • Fulmer matched her season-high strikeouts with 11.

Game 2

CIU 10 Benedict 9: Benedict took an early lead after a two-run homer in the first, but CIU answered with six runs in the bottom of the second after six hits and an error. The Tigers added three in the top of the third, but CIU matched this to lead 9-5 after a Stolzenbach triple. After Benedict responded with four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game 9-9, both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. The Rams plated the go-ahead run on a sac fly from Lilli Petty. Benedict moved a runner into scoring position in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout from Jada Cox ended the game to give CIU the sweep.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Petty and Macey Drye were perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively.

  • Stolzenbach led with three RBI, while Thompson collected two.

  • Cox picked up the win, allowing four hits and striking out five in 4.0 innings pitched.

What head coach Sara Allen says: "I'm proud of the team for coming out on top in two different type battles tonight. We're starting to tighten up many things about our game, and it's good to see us win the moments that matter. I'm looking forward to starting conference games next weekend. It will be a challenge to start with Bryan and Tennessee Wesleyan, but this team wants to compete and win more than any other CIU softball team we've had. This is a really fun group to take the field with, so I think you can expect some big things from your Rams in the AAC this year!"

Up Next: CIU kicks off AAC play next weekend, Feb. 23, with a road trip to Dayton, Tenn., to take on Bryan College in a doubleheader slated to start at 5:00 p.m. EST.
