Men's Soccer's playoff run ends after PK's in AAC Quarterfinals

CLEVELAND, Ga. - CIU men's soccer finished the regular season ranked 5th in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) and took on No. 4 seeded Truett McConnell (Ga.) on Friday night's AAC Quarterfinals. The Rams were looking to avenge their regular season loss to the Bears and forced overtime and penalty kicks to decide a winner. Losing 3-4 in PKs would end the Rams AAC tournament run.

Match Summary: The first half was evenly matched, with both teams taking five shots but neither squad finding the back of the next. However, a red card for the Rams in the 42nd minute would force them to play a man-down for the remainder of the contest.

Juan Jimenez put CIU on the board off a blocked corner kick from Pablo Portero quickly into the second half (48'). The Bears then evened the score in the 60th minute. Truett's offense took advantage of a man-down CIU and out-shot the Rams 9-3, but three more saves and a block would force the contest into overtime.

Both teams were blanked in overtime, and the match moved to penalty kicks. CIU missed their opening attempt, which allowed Truett to go ahead after they made their first. The next three Rams scored their PKs, with Matias Breit blocking one of the Bears' to even the score 3-3. The final attempt from the Rams sailed wide, while Truett sealed the victory with a successful PK.
