Men's Soccer downed by Warner in NCCAA Semifinals

LAKE WALES, FLA. - Following the conclusion of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play the CIU men's soccer team earned the No. 2 seed in the NCCAA South Region Tournament. On Monday evening, the Rams headed south to take on No. 3 Warner University (Fla.). Despite a first-half lead, CIU fell 3-1 on the road to the Royals.

Match Summary: Victor Gonzalez and Pablo Portero wasted no time testing the Royals' goalkeeper early in the match. In the 12th minute, Paul Schütte broke through, finding the back of the net to put CIU ahead 1-0.  The Rams maintained control for most of the first half, recording eight shots with four corner kicks. Meanwhile, Warner registered no shots on goal in the first frame to give CIU the 1-0 advantage going into intermission.

The second half didn't feature as much offensive firepower, as the Rams managed just two early shots. Despite the Royals receiving a red card in the 59th minute, they leveled the score at 1-1 just four minutes later. CIU pressed forward with multiple attempts from Noe Limas, Bryan Molina, and Portero, but the goalkeeper denied all. Warner capitalized on their opportunities, adding two more goals to secure a 3-1 lead. In the final moments, Gonzalez attempted a header, but the keeper made a crucial save to seal the result.
